AAA Releases Thanksgiving Travel Predictions

Nov 26, 2015
Daily

AAA Travel predicts 46.9 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles from home this Thanksgiving holiday weekend. This marks a .6 percent increase over last year and the highest number of travelers since 2007. The Thanksgiving travel period is defined as Wednesday, Nov. 25–Sunday, Nov. 29.

“This Thanksgiving, more Americans will carve out time to visit friends and family since 2007,” said Marshall Doney, president and CEO, AAA. “While many people remain cautious about the economy and their finances, many thankful Americans continue to put a premium on traveling to spend the holiday with loved ones.”

Gas prices are below last year’s and will likely be the lowest Thanksgiving prices since 2008. The current national average is $2.15 for a gallon of gas, 65 cents less than last year’s average of $2.80 at this time of year. This is good news for the 89 percent of holiday travelers who plan to hit the road. An estimated 42 million travelers are expected to drive to their destination, a .7 percent increase from 2014.

Fares for round-trip domestic flights land about 10 percent below last year’s average. Nightly hotel rates and daily rental car rates have increased over last year at 4 and 8 percent, respectively.

Explore Portugal on a Wine Tasting Tour with a Touch of History

All it takes is one glance at the grounds of Quinta Dona Maria, which includes a grand villa and surrounding gardens, to realize wine tasting in Portugal comes with a good dose of history. The vineyard is located in Estremoz, just northeast of the first-century Roman ruins found in Evora. In 1718 King João V built this estate for his lover, Dona Maria. When she died, the current owner’s ancestors purchased the land and have been making wine ever since. Taste the wine, which is terrific, especially the full-bodied red Dona Maria Grand Reserve. Then venture inside a building that stores large amphora vases, including one dating back to the 1200s.
