Flying private is a concept often considered out of the realm of possibilities for the everyday traveler, but a handful of startup companies are making private air travel more affordable and accessible for travelers of all budgets.

JetSmarter is one such startup company that is similar to an Uber Pool of the sky. The service lets its members tag along on already-existing chartered flights within their network. Membership costs a cool $2,500, but comes with the luxury of app-based alerts that clue members in to flights during their requested dates and times. The one drawback is the journey is not completely private; you may have to spend your “private” flight with up to 15 other passengers.

JetSuiteX is a sort-of combination of commercial and private flying onboard a 30-seat aircraft with other travelers. The service currently only operates within California where multiple flights per day between Burbank and Oakland cost as little as $300 for a round-trip ticket.

Finally, Uberjets — not related to the rideshare company Uber — is a mobile app that lets users search for and reserve charter flights not tied to any specific fleet or brand of aircraft. Uberjet also tracks “empty-leg” flights where a traveler drops out of a private flight at the last minute, thus making a space available for a lucky Uberjet user who can take advantage of a discounted fare.
