Qatar Airways announced plans to roll out Airbus A380 aircraft on its daily services to Melbourne (MEL) starting June 30. The planes represent an upgrade on the route, which currently uses Boeing 777-300.
The A380 planes, with 517 seats, allow the airline to increase its capacity on the route by 44 percent. Qatar Airways’ A380 aircraft include eight first-class suites and 48 business-class seats in a 1-2-1 configuration.
The flight departs Doha (DOH) at 2050 and lands in Melbourne at 1720 the following day, for a flight time of just more than 13 hours. The return flight leaves Melbourne at 2205 and arrives in Doha at 0525 the following morning, clocking in at 14 hours and 20 minutes.
Melbourne became the first Australian destination for the company in 2009.
Qatar Airways chief executive Akbar Al Baker said, “We have seen a clear need to inject additional capacity on the Melbourne service. We are delighted to introduce our A380 aircraft to Melbourne after seven years of operation in the world’s most livable city.”
