Korean Air officials announced they would begin revising rules regarding the use of stun guns and other forcible measures to handle unruly passengers. The decision to allow crew members to more readily use stun guns comes as a result of an incident with a drunk man attacking flight attendants and other passengers.

One of the passengers on the flight was Richard Marx, an American musician, who claimed the crew was not properly trained to handle the situation.

“We have decided to improve our conditions and procedure on using Taser guns to cope with violent acts and disturbances on board in a fast and efficient manner,” said Korean Air.

Flight attendants involved in the incident carried a stun gun, but were stricken by fear of the consequences if used. The new changes made by the airline allow crewmembers to use a Taser gun as soon as an unruly passenger refuses to comply with verbal warnings.

The airline also announced it will begin banning disruptive passengers who continue to violate the rules and hiring more male flight attendants to combat the in-flight violence.

The Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said the number of unlawful acts committed in flight soared to 460 last year, from 191 in 2012.
