Airline miles are not typically associated with flexibility, but Lufthansa is taking steps to make using miles easier.
Members of the airline’s Miles and More program will now be able to pay for a seat using a combination of miles and cash, Lufthansa announced last month.
The German airline says members can use miles to pay for award flights either in part or in full for flights with Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Germanwings and Eurowings.
The new system went into effect on a rolling basis starting in Germany Nov. 17. Members in Switzerland, Belgium, Finland, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain and Italy should be able to partake starting in early 2017.
There’s a catch, though: To use the part-pay option, mileage members must have accrued at least 7,000 award miles. The system can be used in all classes as well as for all flight connections available on the Lufthansa website, so there’s quite a bit of flexibility in booking. Members will continue to collect award and status miles with these bookings, too.
