Japan — a country already known for outstanding rail lines — is stepping up its train game with two new luxury trains. The first, Twilight Express Mizukaze from JR West will traverse the untouched landscape of West Japan, with trips departing Kyoto, Osaka and Shimonoseki. The train will consist of 10 cars that includes six sleeper cars, two sightseeing cars, a dining car and a lounge car. Twilight Express will have a capacity of only 30 travelers, making it a fairly exclusive endeavor. Top chefs will produce exclusive menus designed to highlight the specialties of the regions the train travels through. The other train, called Train Suite Shiki-Shima from JR East will run from Tokyo’s Ueno station through Tohoku and into Hokkaido. Like the other train, this one will also highlight local food. It will comprise 10 cars, with four for dining and scenery viewing. The JR East train will hold only 34 passengers in 17 luxury rooms spread over six sleeper cars. It’s expected to begin operations next May.
