The uncertain time period between boarding an airplane and actually taking off into the air may decrease in the near future with the implementation of a new algorithm developed by engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The algorithm takes into account the current weather, the traffic of other aircraft on the runway and both incoming and outgoing flights. Using the data, air traffic controllers can predict how long it will take for the aircraft to go from closing the door to taking off.
If a lengthy wait time is anticipated, the pilots will not give the green light for passengers to board until the aircraft’s approximate ascension time is confirmed. Once a take-off time is calculated, passengers can board and enjoy a quick departure shortly after boarding.
Not only does this initiative save passengers from waiting in the line of airplanes on the tarmac, it also saves fuel as planes will spend less time taxiing on the runway. By waiting at the gate instead of idling on the runway, planes save approximately 16 to 20 gallons of fuel.
