The formation of Asia Cruise Cooperation was recently announced, a joint effort by five destinations to target Asian cruising tourism. Hainan, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Taiwan and Xiamen will support the development of cruising in the region, working alongside cruise lines and other related brands.
“When planning an itinerary, cruise lines tend to choose attractive ports of call in the same region,” said Zinan Liu, president, North APAC and China, Royal Caribbean International. “As a result, we believe it’s essential to collaborate with our ACC partnering destinations in order to attract international cruise companies and develop new itineraries.”
Currently, Asia is home to 3,500 port calls and 1,000 scheduled cruises. Passenger capacity in 2015 was estimated at more than 2 million. In the past two years, Taiwan’s cruise tourism industry grew by 80 per cent to accommodate more than 260,000 cruise tourists, and cruise calls to the Philippines are growing at a rate of 50 per cent yearly.
