Lonely Planet recently released their annual list of the best U.S. destinations to visit for the current year. The list is compiled by the company’s U.S.-based writers and editors and looks at the most popular U.S. destinations, as well as little-known and hidden spots that deserve proper recognition.
The big three this year were Philadelphia, Pa.; Natchez, Miss.; and Yellowstone National Park. Following were Birmingham, Ala.; Alaska; Somerville, Mass; Northwest Arkansas; San Antonio, Texas; Southern New Mexico; and Milwaukee, Wis.
“These are the places to pay attention to in 2016. Whether they’ve been on the public radar for years or are only recently emerging as travel hotspots, each destination offers compelling reasons to visit this year,” said Rebecca Warren, U.S. destination editor, Lonely Planet.
Reasons given for the particular destinations picked include significant anniversaries, hosting large events and surges in food, bar and music scenes.
