Pirates, Oysters And Girlfriend Getaways on Georgia’s Seashore

Oct 6, 2013
Daily / Exclusive

Tybee Island — or “salt” island, as translated from the original Euchee language of the Native Americans who named it — lies off the coast of Georgia near Savannah. A number of annual festivals and events make its warm, sandy beaches and quirky town a regular draw. During the Tybee Island Pirate Fest, Oct. 10–13, costumed swashbucklers from around the country arrive to participate in themed activities that include a Buccaneer Ball, Thieves’ Market, live music, food, a pirates’ village and the Scallywags Costume Contest.

Through December, all things oyster are celebrated at local restaurants, including A. J. Dockside Restaurant and Marlin Monroe’s. Year-round, the 2.7-square-mile island is a popular destination for girlfriend “Glamping” Getaways. A far cry from camping, a cluster of brightly colored beachside cottages and private home rentals serve as accommodations.

By day, cycle the quirky town and Colonial Coastal Birding trail, or enjoy a wide selection of water sports. When the sun goes down, head to North Beach Grill to savor the Jamaican-fusion menu created by Chef George Spriggs. Save room for one of his fabulous desserts: Nine-layer chocolate cake, caramel cake and praline apple pie are waiting for you.

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
