As part of The Peninsula Istanbul’s Art in Resonance program, the hotel debuted illuminated works from artist Grimanesa Amorós, launched in tandem with the Contemporary Istanbul art fair. Art in Resonance is The Peninsula Hotels’ global initiative to support visionary artists around the world.
Through the end of November, The Peninsula Istanbul hosts two new light installations, specially commissioned for the hotel, from internationally acclaimed, Peruvian-born artist Grimanesa Amorós; the works are entitled PASSAGE and MARITIME.
“We are thrilled to host these installations, and to offer our visitors a deeper sense of engagement with the culture of our city,” said Jonathan Crook, managing director, The Peninsula Istanbul. “As the Art in Resonance program recognizes, art – like travel – has a remarkable ability to forge connections and open dialogue across spheres of life. It is a privilege to further these aims through this exhibition, particularly PASSAGE, which can be seen from the Bosphorus and is meant as a visual gift to city residents.”
Amorós’s work has previously been exhibited at The Peninsula New York, as well as venues like The Ludwig Museum in Cologne, Germany, and The Central Academy of Fine Arts in Shanghai. The two site-specific pieces exclusively for The Peninsula Istanbul are displayed under the shared exhibit title A Wave of Time.
PASSAGE, the first installation, features a light sculpture in the hotel’s historic clock tower, set atop the hotel’s Passenger Terminal building, constructed in the 1910s as an arrival and departure point for ferry boats. The piece evokes the rhythms of human movement in a spot once defined by farewells and reunions.
The second piece, MARITIME, features a suspended installation in the hotel lobby suggesting the form of a ship. A reference to The Peninsula Istanbul’s connection to nautical history, the work reflects upon the bonds developed during oceanic travel.
