Vacationers travel to the posh island of St.-Barth for its ritzy shops, tucked-away local beaches and elevated cuisine melding classic French technique with flavorful Caribbean ingredients. Guests staying at Hôtel Manapany, an eco-focused boutique property on picturesque Anse des Cayes beach, can also sip their way through beverages that showcase these two distinct yet remarkably harmonious cultures.
It all starts after a short ride from Gustaf III Airport, where the precariously short runway flanked by steep mountains is enough to put anyone in the mood for a stiff cocktail. While seated on a sofa next to the sea-facing free-form hotel pool completing the check-in process, you can rehydrate with fresh chilled coconut water served directly from the fruit, whose green skin is carved with an image of the sea turtles you might encounter on walks around the property.
If you crave something stronger but still refreshing, try the Tropical Fashioned, a rum-based Caribbean riff with coconut, vanilla and mango, or the Indiana, a cousin of the Porn Star Martini currently chomping at the heels of the espresso martini for the cocktail à la mode. It shakes vodka with passion fruit, vanilla, lime and allspice; the only thing missing from the original is the Champagne sidecar.
After a rejuvenating oceanfront morning yoga class or a body scrub at the spa, sit by the adults-only spa pool and order a healthy elixir such as pressed green juice or a lemonade made with fresh citrus and Perrier. (On Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, a special spa package includes a 45-minute massage and a glass of Champagne.)
During a toes-in-the-sand lunch, explore the West Indies Punch section of the cocktail menu; sample Ti Punch, made with rhum agricole — an earthy spirit distilled on French Caribbean islands from the freshly pressed juice of sugarcane — shaken with lime and brown sugar. Rum fans can travel around the Caribbean via their glass with pours from Barbados, Guatemala, Panamá, Martinique and more, including aged and rare expressions from the Harmonie Collection of Guadeloupe distillery Longueteau.
But the wine program remains the hotel’s pièce de résistance. While most establishments on St.-Barth work with local suppliers, the Manapany imports its wines directly from France, drawing on its favorite, often smaller and less well-known producers. Since it’s fortunate to have ample cellar storage, it only needs to place one order for the season. The resulting list is a curated collection of expected brands like Perrier Jouët and Baron de Rothschild as well as surprising bottles like Domaine Collet Champagne and Le B Création rosé from Provence.
What’s more, especially at the end of the high season, the hotel offers some of its spendy wines at slashed prices of 50 percent off (or more), listing these great finds on the menu and also taking out an ad in the local newspaper to appeal to affluent locals. After all, as the adage goes, no one likes a bargain like the wealthy.
