Last week in New York City I met the founder of a TV channel from Chicago called Cool TV. The concept is a music channel dedicated to music videos, basically, the concept upon which MTV was founded. Earlier this year while in the Jumeirah Zabeel Saray in Dubai, I was getting ready for dinner when something on television caught my eye — a bunch of water glasses jumping to a heavy bass beat. I was immediately mesmerized. I stopped what I was doing to watch and listen. The video then revealed an outstanding voice and I had to know who was singing. It turned out to be Adele, singing “Rolling in the Deep.” I was hooked, like most of the world. The tune quickly became a top-seller. When I returned home, I went to iTunes and bought several Adele songs, thanks to seeing her music video. It got me thinking about the influence television has on the consumer and what types of programming I watch. I don’t have cable TV at home, so the majority of cable TV I watch is in hotels, usually overseas. When I’m traveling overseas, if I have the chance to turn on the television, it is usually in the morning, getting ready for the day or as background noise while I’m in the room. I typically watch CNN, BBC or a music video channel, much like Cool TV. If Cool TV takes off, perhaps we’ll see music videos make a comeback, or at least see the power of niche TV channels. — Alex Young, vice president and associate publisher

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
