It’s officially September! As a born and bred Northeasterner, to me it still means the last chance to catch some summer beach time, back-to-school, and starting to watch for leaves turning color. But I live in Florida now, where we can expect 90-degree heat for at least another month, kids went back to school weeks ago, and it’s always green (unless the drought turns it brown). Down here, September means uh-oh, watch for hurricanes. Instead of trying to reconcile my expectations for September with my realities, I cast my eye westward. In the upcoming Sept. 4 eFlyer, you’ll see an item about California Wine Month. Check it out; this is a great time to be traveling in California, especially the wine country (which, these days, has extended pretty far south into the state). If you’re doing business in California in September, or just passing through, you’ll still be able to take advantage of discount wine pricing and some free tastings. In fairness to my adopted state, I should say that there are some wineries here. Homegrown Florida wines are, however, usually the sweet variety, made from muscadine grapes or a variety of fruits. When I see berry wine, I think of Boone’s Farm–I guess that’s my northern bias showing. So right now I’m envying California, which has a mix of climates from beaches to ski mountains–and real honest-to-goodness wine. –Mary Hunt, Editor, eFlyer
