Switzerland, Best Exports

Victorinox’s Original Swiss Army Knife was created in 1897 and went on to become one of Switzerland’s most famous exports. Today, the knives are still crafted in Ibach, Switzerland, but the products themselves are much more complex. About 450 steps go into creating the three-and-a-half-inch SwissChamp, which has 33 traveler-friendly features, including a corkscrew, can opener, scissors and a ballpoint pen. $88. Switzerland might be best known for its Emmentaler cheese (the kind with holes), but an exclusive variety is Tête de Moine, also called monk’s head cheese. Fewer than 10 dairies produce the cheese, but it’s available at nearly every Swiss cheese market. Just be sure they don’t see you cut into the wheels. The semi-hard cheese should be shaved into rosettes with a Girolle, allowing air to expand the cheese’s natural flavor. About $26 for a 2-pound wheel. (http://www.tetedemoine.ch/en.aspx)

Every savvy traveler needs a fine Swiss watch. A luxurious choice is a Breguet timepiece, produced in the Vallée de Joux, the western part of the country. Marie- Antoinette had many delicate Breguet pieces. A sportier — and more budget-friendly — choice is the Marine 5817, a steel wristwatch with a caseback with a sapphire crystal. $13,950. The nation that first combined fresh milk with cocoa beans has the highest chocolate consumption in the world — about one bar per person per day — with travelers responsible for much of that indulgence. Stop by the Lindt & Sprüngli factory in Kilchberg (near Zurich) to sample truffles and mousse au chocolat. From June through October, tourists also embark on the Swiss Chocolate Train, making stops at a dairy, a castle and the Cailler- Nestlé chocolate factory (http://www.myswitzerland.com). Can’t hop aboard? Enjoy Swiss chocolate at home with Neuchatel’s Swiss Chips — all-American Herr’s potato chips dipped in imported Swiss chocolate. $8 per tin. (http://www.neuchatelchocolates.com)
