Driving into Dallas during a rainstorm, we were eager to arrive at our destination. The valet parking at Marriott Dallas Uptown is underground and ideal for inclement weather. We took the elevator to the lobby and made our way to the registration desk. The staff wore masks, but still managed to convey a warm greeting. On the wall behind them hung a colorful piece of art made partially from reclaimed wood that depicts neighborhood scenes. The new hotel covers an entire block in a residential area and opened earlier this year.
The lobby, with a two-story ceiling and a wall full of windows, is an inviting space with loads of seating. The contemporary decor, filled with bookcases, creates intimate spots for working on a laptop or chatting with friends. The Good Graces Lobby Bar hosts a popular happy hour, 2–6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with discounted drinks and bites.
Our fourth-floor room, in shades of gray with a city view, contained two beds, a flat-screen TV, mini fridge, safe, coffeemaker and desk. The wheelchair-accessible accommodations also had a roll-in shower. There’s a large fitness center open 24 hours a day and a heated outdoor swimming pool.
The hotel’s modern American brasserie, Good Graces, is light-filled with warm wood tones and located on the first floor. Outside, there’s a large patio with a table-top gas fireplace. Chef Juan Pablo Silva, who honed his culinary skills at The Ritz-Carlton, created the elevated comfort food menu. We highly recommend a bowl of the rigatoni with a glass of red wine. For dessert, split the chocolate molten cake with whipped dulce mousse and caramel sauce, decorated with caramel popcorn and fresh berries.
Nestled in the Uptown neighborhood, the hotel is less than a five-minute walk to the Katy Trail. About a mile away lies Dallas Museum of Art and the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. Marriott Dallas Uptown works well for either the leisure or business traveler who appreciates a contemporary stay away from the crowds yet convenient to all the city offers.

May 27, 2025Plan a Legendary Gathering in Honolulu
Myths and origin stories form a powerful framework for the history of Hawai‘i. Marking the horizon behind Honolulu, the ancient volcanic formation of Lē‘ahi — technically a volcanic tuff cone more commonly known to the world as Diamond Head — provides a constant physical reminder of the tales that shaped the history of this location. While researching legends for my Hawai‘i-based Dark Paradise Mysteries series (Kensington Books), I learned the tale of the demigod Maui, who used his enchanted fishing hook to reach into the sea to heave the Hawaiian islands, including Diamond Head, above the surface of the water.
