Fans and frequent travelers of Southwest Airlines will notice a few changes to the airline in 2020.
One change Southwest passengers can look forward to is the removal of the expiration date for Rapid Rewards points. Taking a page out of the books of other major airline rewards programs, Southwest Rapid Rewards members will no longer worry about points expiring, or scrambling to make sure accounts stay active by earning or redeeming points every 24 months, required by the previous policy.
A not-so-pleasant change coming to the Rapid Rewards program, however, involves an increase in the number of points needed to obtain a Companion Pass, a pass allowing travelers to bring a guest to fly with them for free. Previously, Rapid Rewards members needed 110,000 points per calendar year to obtain a Companion Pass, but, beginning in 2020, members will need 125,000 points to earn a Companion Pass.
Finally, Southwest recently announced agreements with Amadeus and Travelport to make flights available for travel managers via these channels. When it goes into effect in summer 2020, this will be the first time Southwest’s flight schedules and pricing will be available to travel agencies.
