Last year was the biggest year ever for the cruise industry in Asia.
According to Cruise Lines International Association, 2018 was a record-breaking year for the cruise industry. The region recorded a nearly 5 per cent increase over 2017 in terms of passengers originating in Asia. More than 4.2 million passengers cruised out of Asia in 2018.
Globally, 28.5 million people cruised last year. Asia measured up to 14.8 per cent of the total global cruise population in 2018.
The biggest increase by percentage by country comes from Indonesia, with 72,000 Indonesian cruisers taking to the seas. The biggest decrease by percentage comes from Malaysia, which had a 19.9 per cent drop in cruisers.
China remains the biggest cruising country by number of passengers, with 2.357 million passengers cruising from there.
The report reveals that in terms of destinations, 90 per cent of Asian cruisers choose destinations within Asia. The most popular destination outside of Asia is the Mediterranean. The average cruise lasted 4.3 days and the average age of cruise passengers is 45.
