Have you ever been to a destination with a resident animal? These cute locals typically have their own personalities, favorite spots and daily routes that make them a must-see during a trip. These five resident animals can be found around the world, waiting to meet new travelers.

Milaidhoo’s Grey Heron, Georgina

Although the blue shorelines are what typically catch travelers’ attention, Milaidhoo Maldives is also home to a grey heron named Georgina. Over the years, Georgina has become a true icon of the property. Maldivian folklore says the heron, also known as a Maakanaa, represents wit and cleverness. Georgina can typically be found at Ocean Restaurant trying to steal a bite of food at breakfast, relaxing on the shoreline or walking around the Compass Bar pool.

Gaya Island Resort’s Bearded Pig Family

Located on a private beach of Malaysia’s Tavajun Bay, Gaya Island Resort offers guests the unique opportunity to see more than one resident animal. Timmy the Bornean bearded pig and his family can be found exploring the bay at sunset or wandering the beach during the day. The pigs are native to Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Kitui the Rhino at Segera

Recently, ZEITZ Foundation and Segera have worked closely with Kenya Wildlife Service to relocate a population of critically endangered eastern black rhinos to Segera’s conservancy. Over the past couple months, these rhinos have been closely monitored by KWS specialists as they adjust, but one rhino in particular has stolen the hearts of both the team and guests. Kitui was orphaned at a young age and raised by humans, which not only saved his life but also made him comfortable around people. He can be spotted hanging out near the retreat or coming up close to safari vehicles, the star deck and even the staff village.

Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach’s Neighborhood Squirrels

As part of its Green Engage Activities, Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach recently created a wooden house for its local squirrels to live and eat in. Squirrels are fed with the hotel’s leftover fruits and nuts from the restaurant to help manage waste. Guests are invited to observe the squirrels, but are still reminded to be respectful of their space.

Hemingways Ol Seki Mara’s Leopard, Spot

Those staying in luxury tents at Hemingways Ol Seki Mara in Kenya may be lucky enough to spot the resort’s resident leopard, Spot. Spot can be found wandering around the camp on the hunt for a meal for her and her two cubs. Spot and her cubs have their own distinctive personalities, but the son can often be found by her side while her daughter tends to be more independent. It’s important to note the company does not feed, track or follow Spot and her family (human interference risks death for wild animals in the bush).
