Planning a trip to Jordan? Not sure where to start? Here are four can’t-miss spots to visit in Jordan beyond the primary attractions of Petra, the Dead Sea and Amman.

Al-Maghtas

This pilgrimage site on the Israel-Jordan border is supposed to be the original location of the baptism of Jesus and the ascension of the prophet Elijah. The UNESCO World Heritage site is home to several archaeological digs, seeing many visitors throughout the year, especially in January for Epiphany.

Jerash

While it’s not as well known, Jerash gets just about as many visitors as Petra. Jerash is also conveniently located near Amman and an easy day visit. The historic site is filled with ruins from Byzantine and Roman empires and considered one of the most well preserved Roman provincial cities.

Dana Nature Reserve

Dana Nature Reserve is Jordan’s largest protected area. There’s plenty to explore and see here, from the wildlife and camping options to the archaeological sites.

Wadi Rum

This desert valley boasts beautiful geographical features, attracting Bedouins such as T.E. Lawrence and modern-day filmmakers seeking a dramatic backdrop. For an even more immersive experience, stay in a desert camp and ride a camel around the towering stone pillars.
