Luggage brand Tumi launched a Global Locator device to be placed into luggage, providing real-time data on its location.

The $200 device, which weighs less than half a pound, uses GPS, GSM, WiFi and Bluetooth technology to track its location, delivering data to customer’s Android or Apple app.

“While airports and airlines are investing in technology to track luggage under their respective jurisdictions, the Tumi Global Locator puts the power into customers’ hands, providing tracking ability from the second a journey begins,” said a Tumi spokesperson.

The device features four modes depending on the user’s requirements, relying on sensor technologies including an accelerometer. Travel mode tracks the bag’s location every 20–30 minutes, building a history of its location; sleep mode, activated anytime, will activate automatically during flights; hotel mode allows the user to designate a home base like the hotel room, sending an alert should the bag move from its location; and proximity mode uses Bluetooth technology to allow the user to tether the locator to a connected device like a mobile phone, sending an alert in the event of an unexpected movement.

Tumi’s Global Locator is cleared by the Federal Aviation Administration on Radio Frequency Testing while employing the highest level of security standards that exist in the current market. The strongest firewalls, specific authorization protocols and encryption protect all personal information.
