In an age when the airline travel is increasingly devoid of perks, United Airlines is apparently trying to up its game a bit. The airline launched a new in-flight gift service called Celebrate, which allows customers to buy a gift for a passenger from a selection of duty-free items. United will then deliver it onboard with a personalized note. The program is available for any passenger departing on a flight from the United States. The gift-giver need not be present on the flight; all you need to give a gift is the passenger’s name and flight number. Gift possibilities include neck pillows, perfume, headphones and toiletries. The program is a throwback to vintage airline travel, when luxury and comfort were the focus of flying, and airlines went out of their way to pamper passengers. The program was actually suggested by an employee, who remembered delivering a bottle of Champagne to a honeymooning couple 40 years ago. Is United making a greater effort to improve the flying experience? The airline returned to offering free snacks in economy earlier this year.
