United Airlines is rolling out a new Basic Economy fare, but for many the lower price does not justify the class’ limitations and inconveniences.
The new fare launching in the second quarter of 2017 comes with some drawbacks. Passengers in Basic Economy will not be able to choose their own seats, meaning no guarantee of sitting next to travel companions; they will only be allowed one carry-on bag that must fit underneath the seat; and they will be the last boarding group.
The Basic Economy fare class is part of a larger United strategy to diversify its product offerings and increase efficiency for travelers.
Julia Haywood, executive vice president and chief commercial officer, United Airlines, said, “Customers have told us that they want more choice and Basic Economy delivers just that. By offering low fares while also offering the experience of traveling on our outstanding network, with a variety of onboard amenities and great customer service, we are giving our customers an additional travel option from what United offers today.”
Travelers in Basic Economy will still have access to the usual economy amenities including food, beverage, WiFi and personal device entertainment.
