Bangkok’s famously motorbike-clogged streets are getting a boost from Uber, which is rolling out a new motorbike service in the Thai city. The service will be called UberMOTO, and it was introduced last month. The rideshare company experimented with motorbike rides in Paris in 2012, but it wasn’t a permanent expansion. An Uber competitor, Grab, already runs a similar service in Southeast Asia.

Users familiar with Uber will find the new service easy to access. In Bangkok’s three central neighborhoods, Uber users can request a motorbike ride through the app, just as they currently request a car. The drivers are required to provide helmets to passengers; this is a requirement set by the city of Bangkok for all motorcycle riders and drivers.

Uber says more than 1,500 new cars are introduced daily to Bangkok’s infamously traffic-ridden streets, and traffic speeds have dropped to under 16 km per hour, and 11 km per hour during rush hour.

As with UberX or UberBLACK, all motorbike drivers must undergo an extensive screening process which includes a police background check. Rates start at ฿10 + ฿3.50/km + ฿0.85/min. The minimum fare as well as cancellation fee are both ฿10.
