According to the latest data from the United Nations World Tourism Organization, international tourism continues to strengthen, despite security and economic concerns.

International overnight stays increased 6 per cent to 369 million in the first three months of 2018, an increase of 21 million visitors compared to this time last year.

International arrivals increased in all major regions, with the Middle East and Africa seeing especially strong growth at 10 per cent and 8 per cent, respectively. Europe, Asia Pacific and the Americas also saw robust gain.

In Asia Pacific, South Asia saw the most significant growth with 14 per cent more international travellers than last year, followed by Oceania with 7 per cent growth, Southeast Asia with 6 per cent growth and Northeast Asia with 5 per cent growth.

“Destinations that were affected by negative events during 2016 are showing clear signs of recovery in a very short period of time, and this is very welcoming news for all, but particularly for those whose livelihoods depend on tourism in these destinations,” said Taleb Rifai, secretary-general, UNWTO.

According to UNWTO’s Panel of Tourism Experts, global tourism in the first four months of 2017 reflects the highest confidence score in 12 years.
