Having produced wines for more than 300 years, it is now the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world. Here is a roundup of some of the country’s top wine regions.

Located between San Francisco and Los Angeles, Paso Robles, Calif., offers the perfect climate for premium wines, on par with regions like Napa and Sonoma. It is home to more than 200 wineries, mostly comprised of boutique and family-owned establishments that have been around for decades. The region has gained recognition for its innovative blends of Bordeaux, Rhône and Zinfandel varietals.

Walla Walla, Wash., offers the perfect combination of climate, character, charm and culture in its expansive wine region. The beautiful region features vast sagebrush deserts cut with scenic rivers and aquifers that aid in producing its quality grapes. It is home to some of the finest wines in Washington with more than 100 wineries and 2,800 acres of vineyards.

Known as the birthplace of American wine, Charlottesville, Va., is renowned for its old world-style wines, inspired by Thomas Jefferson’s vision of winemaking. The region enjoys the perfect climate and fertile granite-based clay soil for grape growing, with more than 2,000 vineyard acres throughout the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains region.

The first Pinot Noir grapes were planted in Oregon's Willamette Valley in 1965, and the region has since become a leading producer of fine wines in the United States. The climate is ideal for the Pinot Noir grape, one most commonly associated with the Burgundy region of France. Willamette Valley features more than 14,400 acres of Pinot Noir varietals, 715 vineyards and 531 wineries.

New York’s Finger Lakes Wine Country is a world-class wine-producing region, home to more than 120 wineries surrounding the Keuke, Seneca and Cayuga Lakes. Due to the region’s microclimate created by the lakes, producers specialize in aromatic white varietals such as Riesling and Gewürztraminer, as well as cool-climate reds such a Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir.

This one may come as a surprise, but the Augusta, Mo., wine region is one of historical significance in the U.S. wine tradition, as the first American Viticultural Area on record. Its Norton grape, used in wines throughout the region, is on par with some of the world’s finest, and the Augusta region has been internationally recognized in recent years when it began exporting wine to Germany.

Another unexpected, yet nonetheless important U.S. wine region can be found in Texas Hill Country. The Lone Star State produces some of the country’s most surprisingly great wine from 51 established wineries scattered throughout the region’s picturesque rolling hills.
