Travel is slowly coming back with destinations reopening one by one. One of the newest destinations to announce its grand reopening: the Maldives.
The Maldives have been closed since the start of COVID-19, but some resorts stayed open to accommodate guests who’d chosen to self-isolate there or were unable to make it home. As of July 1, the popular tourist destination is open to travelers.
To ensure safety, the government is issuing a Safe Tourism License to make sure tourist facilities abide by government regulations. These safety measures will include having a certified on-call medic and having a stock of personal protective equipment, such as masks and gloves.
Tourists traveling to the Maldives will need to provide a medical certificate to prove a negative COVID-19 test or antibodies test taken at least 14 days before they arrive. Travelers will also have to have a confirmed booking with a Safe Tourism Licensed facility.
In a previous reopening proposal, the Ministry of Tourism stated there would be extra tourist visa charges and landing fees, but this has been removed from the newest proposal in hopes to generate more tourism.
