With Earth Day around the corner on April 22, travel companies offer sustainable travel experiences. Check out the latest from these sustainable cruise lines.

Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic

Sustainability has long been important to Lindblad Expeditions. The company raised more than $20 million for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of protecting the ocean, conserving wildlife and preserving local communities and culture. It was the first expedition cruise to implement 100 percent carbon neutral practices in 2019 in support of its climate initiatives. The fleet serves as a home base for scientific exploration including discoveries of new species and supporting conservation efforts.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

The cruise line’s sustainability officer Julie Higgins works toward its goal of reducing food waste on board by 50 percent by 2025. Uniworld uses a food waste reduction program, Leanpath, to improve kitchen efficiency and prevent food waste on a large scale. The program will be implemented across the line’s entire fleet by the end of 2023. Other goals include eliminating single-use plastic and switching to renewable energy. Uniworld is the first river cruise line to publish an impact report, detailing progress of its sustainability goals.

Holland America Line

Holland America Line works toward its commitment to decarbonization. The line’s design director My Nguyen focuses on sustainable interior design elements on board, including creating carpeting made from 100 percent recyclable material (organic natural wool without dyes or chemicals). Holland America Line is the first cruise line to achieve a Responsible Fisheries Management certification for sustainable and traceable seafood.
