A new report from online booking platform Agoda shows solo travel is on the rise in Asia.

The survey, conducted by YouGov, found relaxation and time to unwind were the No. 1 factors travellers cite when discussing their own solo travel habits. According to the survey, solo travellers ranked escaping from routine, exploring new cultures and relaxing as top motivators for embarking on solo travel.

In Asia, solo travellers are more likely to be younger. Forty-one per cent of respondents were millennials and 38 per cent responded to the survey from Generation Z. In addition to being younger overall, solo travellers are more likely to spend more time in front of a screen, be that a laptop or phone, while travelling. According to the survey, solo travellers from Asia are twice as likely to spend more than four hours in front of a screen during travel than Western solo travellers.

The data includes those travelling for business and for leisure, conducive for travel to large metropolises.

Agoda’s booking data asserts Bangkok is Asia’s No. 1 destination for solo travellers, followed by Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong.

According to the study’s methodology, Generation Z is defined as people aged 18–25, while millennials are defined as aged 26–38.
