The desert culture oasis of Santa Fe is readying itself for the celebration season. Events include Christmas at the Palace (Dec. 13), a festive holiday party at the 400-year old Palace of the Governors, with a variety of Spanish and Native American traditions honored through music and entertainment. During Las Posadas (Dec. 15), Biblical figures Mary and Joseph follow a candlelit path to shelter in a re-enactment of Luke 2:1–20. On Christmas Eve, the tradition of Farolitos takes place, as luminarias illuminate homes, fences and streets.
There’s plenty more: The annual community menorah lighting takes place Dec. 1 at the Santa Fe Plaza, hosted by the Chabad Jewish Center of Santa Fe and accompanied by latkes and cider. Four performances of The Nutcracker take to the stage Dec. 21–22 at The Lensic performing arts center. Beginning in the middle of December, area pueblos host Native American ceremonial dances. The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center website lists a roster of performances, locations, and useful information on proper etiquette for attending pueblo performances.
