The very first all-embracing retrospective of one of rock-and-roll’s most influential concert promoters is finally reality. Bill Graham and the Rock & Roll Revolution opens May 7 at Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. The Red Cross relocated Berlin-born Graham to New York when he was 11 years old, part of a program to rescue Jewish children from Nazi Germany. Driven by a desire for social justice and cultural equality, he went on to launch the spectacular careers of musicians including the Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, the Rolling Stones and Jefferson Airplane.

Graham established himself in San Francisco during the 1960s, representing the San Francisco Mime Troupe, and eventually taking over the lease on The Fillmore auditorium in San Francisco. The exhibition continues through Oct. 11, and includes photographs, psychedelic art posters from famous concerts at The Fillmore, and personal artifacts on loan from Graham’s family. There’s also the famous apple barrel filled with apples kept by Graham for arriving concert patrons. Harmonic meeting incentive: Groups of 10 or more people can take part in a private, docent-led tour.
