Report Claims Congress Fails Travelers

Sep 1, 2016
Daily

A new report released by FlyersRights.org rates members of Congress according to how well they’ve protected airline passenger rights over the last eight years. The rating system uses a typical academic grading scale, and takes into consideration all funds received from the airline industry, votes and bills sponsored, among other factors. “The very low scores will come as no surprise to the millions of American air travelers. Many members on both sides of the aisle received failing grades,” said Paul Hudson, president, FlyersRights.org. Overall, the average rating received was a “D.” New York Senator Charles Schumer and California Representative Mike Thompson received the highest scores, with the lowest going to Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Peter DeFazio. Other failing members according to the rating system were Senators Ted Cruz and John Thune and Representative Bill Schuster. “It is important for the public and voters to be aware of and hold Congress members accountable for their slow responses and downright refusal to address the frustrations of airline passengers. This includes deteriorating service, ever-shrinking airline seats, soaring ancillary fees, refusal to publicize information, such as passenger rights, needed to hold airlines and TSA accountable for long delays, lost baggage and other consumer abuses,” added Hudson. Travelers can check the report card, posted online, to see how congressional representatives rank. Newsletter sign-up

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
