Traveling to and from Ecuador is a bit easier these days with the opening of the new Mariscal Antonio Jose de Sucre International Airport (UIO) in Quito. The new airport is expected to serve more than 5 million passengers during its first year of operation.
Located 26 miles from downtown Quito, the new airport boasts longer runways than the previous airport, increasing its capacity for direct flights from long-haul destinations. The number of immigration counters has been increased to handle the additional traffic and a new baggage system handles the double the capacity of the handling system at the old airport.
A duty-free store and up to 20 new retail outlets will open this year.
