Looking for an environmental angle for your next excursion to lovely Portugal? Now you can charge up your MOKE for stays at Bomporto properties in Lisbon and Porto. And in case you’re wondering what on earth a MOKE might be, we’re happy to elaborate: Created by British luxury motor brand MOKE International, these iconic vehicles were designed in the 1960s by the same Sir Alec Issigonis, regarded as the father of the Austin Mini.

Since developing an early cult following along the French Riviera and in the Caribbean that included film star Brigitte Bardot and The Beatles, the brand expanded to include the Electric MOKE. These 100-percent, lithium-ion-powered vehicles are still crafted in Northamptonshire, England, and carry the essence of an oh-so-cool electric beach car, but are entirely legal on roads.

Now that you’re up to speed, we’ll tell you where you can drive one yourself. In Lisbon, guests at both The Lumiares Hotel & Spa and The Vintage Hotel & Spa can book an Electric MOKE through the Bomporto guest app, or by making a request through the Guest Relations team. Same goes for The Rebello in Porto, with all three properties offering everything from hour-long to full-day options.

“We’ve always felt that the best way to see a place like Lisbon or Porto is not to over-plan it,” said Nick Roucos, managing director, Bomporto Hotels and SLH Ambassador for Portugal. “It’s about having the freedom to get a little lost, to stop when something catches your eye, to follow a recommendation from someone local and see where that takes you. That’s really what this is about for us, and the MOKE just fits into that mindset in a very natural way.”

MOKEs at each hotel location will feature a signature color, such as Palm Green, Eucalyptus Green, Shell White or Wave Blue. More than just a fun way to get around, this exciting, newly launched collaboration is likely to directly impact the experiences enjoyed by visitors to these cities. Guests at The Rebello can set off on one of a series of carefully curated driving routes that take in the Douro riverfront leading to the coast of the Atlantic, with scenic stops covering Porto and Vila Nova Gaia; or enjoy coastal expeditions through Foz and Matosinhos.

In Lisbon, guests at The Lumiares Hotel & Spa and The Vintage Hotel & Spa will find special routes ranging from coastal expeditions leading toward Cascais and Guincho, to city drives that explore riverside and urban neighborhoods such as those found in Belém, Lapa and Marvila.
