Fort Lauderdale Marriot Pompano Beach Resort & Spa celebrates the sinking of a 324-foot tanker ship, Lady Luck, in style. The ship, originally from New York City, will act as a faux underwater casino a mile off the coast, adding to the southern Florida artificial reef system and attracting divers from all over the world. Marriott is hosting two events to assist the effort. The first, July 8, is a live auction, with the Pompano Beach mayor acting as auctioneer. Memorabilia from the ship is up for grabs, including original passageway lights, portholes and more. Also available for bids are original art pieces inspired by Lady Luck and a vacation worth $25,000. The vacation includes a three-night stay at Marriott Pompano Beach, July 22–25, valet parking, daily breakfast, dinner and the first diving tour of Lady Luck, along with the inspection team and film crew from Scuba Nation. The experience will air on Fox Sun Sports Channel. The second event, July 23, is the sinking of the ship to depths of 120 feet. There it will join Shipwreck Park, an underwater art display featuring 16 other wrecks and art pieces including giant dice and casino-going octopi and sharks. Attendance starts at $75 and includes valet parking, passed hors d’oeuvres, lunch and an open bar. “The addition of Lady Luck decked out with creative artwork will promote growth for more natural marine life to our artificial reef system,” said Greg Harrison, chair, The Shipwreck Park Inc.
