On Oct. 11, Pittsburgh International Airport cut the ribbon on its new $1.7 billion terminal, slated to open to the public later this fall. The new terminal broke ground in 2021 and, once open, will serve as the airport’s transition from a hub of connecting passengers from around the country to an origin-and-destination airport tailored to better serve the Pittsburgh market.
The airport’s new terminal coincides with increased air service. The new terminal includes four outdoor terraces (two pre-security and two post-security), allowing travelers the chance to enjoy some fresh air.
The terminal will feature designs capturing the essence of the Pittsburgh region; a rolling roofline mimic’s the area’s hills; the structural tree columns and terrazzo flooring’s leaf patterns reflect the region’s forests. One of the most striking aspects is the terminal’s constellation lighting, complete with more than 4,000 lights emulating the night sky.
“This is an airport for Pittsburghers, built by Pittsburghers, with Pittsburghers on full display” said Sara Innamorato, executive, Allegheny County. “The possibilities and potential are as endless as the opportunities that the airport has capitalized on to get us here today. We have an airport that reflects, connects and serves the community – and that will continue to fill that role for generations to come.”
