Osaka, colloquially known as the “Kitchen of Japan,” once thrived as a trading hub for rice, vegetables and seafood. During the Edo period it served as the central distribution port for essential goods such as soy sauce, oil and saké, supplying the rest of the country.

Thanks to its rich culinary history, Osaka now boasts several iconic dishes including takoyaki, octopus balls (fried dough filled with diced octopus), okonomiyaki (savory cabbage pancakes) and kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers). Food is so ingrained in  Osaka’s culture, the city’s unofficial motto, “Kuidaore,” means “Eat until you go broke.”

Canopy by Hilton Osaka in the trendy Umeda neighborhood makes a great base in the city. Dine here on Japanese specialties while enjoying décor inspired by the city’s famous dishes, including chandeliers shaped like octopus balls. Then wander around the Dotonbori neighborhood, the center of Osaka’s vibrant food scene and famous for its street eats, canal-side dining and giant animatronic food signs.

However, in Osaka you’ll find much more to do than eat. Universal Studios Japan is located in Osaka, as are quirky attractions such as the CupNoodles Museum, celebrating instant ramen noodles, introduced in Osaka in 1958. Osaka comprises 24 wards, each with its own character. Shinsaibashi, the main shopping district, features everything from large department stores purveying global brands to vintage boutiques selling kimonos.

To immerse in Osaka’s pop culture and anime scene, head to Nipponbashi, also known as DenDen Town. In Morinomiya explore Osaka Castle and a beautiful, massive park. To enjoy Osaka’s waterfront, spend an afternoon wandering around Osaka-Ko. Save time to explore Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, one of the largest in the world, and take a spin on Tempozan Ferris Wheel.

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
