New York Governor Andrew Cuomo unveiled a highly anticipated $10 billion plan to renovate John F. Kennedy International Airport that will also include surrounding infrastructure, transportation to and from the airport and airport accommodations.
The plan aims for a more cohesive airport, which requires demolishing the airport’s older Terminals 1, 2 and 7, and renovating and connecting the airport’s newer Terminals 4, 5 and 8. The interconnection of these terminals will allow travelers to more easily transfer between them without having to clear security more than once. The renovation project will also include new or upgraded restaurants, meeting facilities, retail and duty-free shopping as well as the expansion of taxiways, designed to reduce flight delays. The airport will also see several security upgrades including the integration of facial-recognition technology.
Part of the proposed $10 billion budget will go toward infrastructure improvements surrounding the airport, including a ring road around the terminals, more convenient parking facilities and the expansion of the congested Van Wyck Expressway, the main roadway to JFK. It will also include the addition of two cars to the AirTrains that run between Jamaica Station and the airport, doubling capacity and reducing congestion.
Lodging will be upgraded with construction of the TWA Flight Center Hotel, for which ground was broken in December.
The plan for JFK was announced while work continues on an $8 billion, five-year rebuild of LaGuardia Airport. JFK served 60 million in 2016 and is expected to serve 75 million passengers by 2030 after the necessary renovations and additions.
