An apartment in the sky may be the ultimate in-flight luxury, but Lufthansa has a different philosophy when it comes to strategically utilizing on-board space.
Beginning this month, Lufthansa offers a flying intensive care unit on all planes in its long-haul fleet. The patient transport compartment, developed by Lufthansa Technik in cooperation with Lufthansa’s Medical Service, is now available throughout Lufthansa’s entire network of long-haul flights leaving from Frankfurt and Munich.
The PTC has been offered on Lufthansa’s Boeing 747-400 and Airbus A340 and A330 aircraft since 1999, transporting up to 100 intensive care patients each year. At about half the cost of a conventional air ambulance, Lufthansa’s PTC can accommodate a bed for the patient, plus two seats (one for the doctor treating the patient and another for a Lufthansa crew member), in addition to necessary intensive care equipment and required material and medication.
