JetBlue announced last week its intention to retrofit its Airbus fleet with vortex generators in an attempt to reduce noise.
The move reflects JetBlue’s commitment to the people who live in neighborhoods where planes fly. The generators are small devices that disrupt air as it travels over the wings, reducing a whistling sound commonly heard during descents.
In 2015, JetBlue began receiving aircraft with the generator pre-installed. Now, it is working to affix the remaining 138 Airbus aircraft with the generators by 2021.
“While the airline industry has benefited from advances in technology and efficiency leading to quieter planes and engines, the work is never done,” said Joe Bertapelle, director of strategic airspace programs, JetBlue. “We’re pleased to incorporate this advancement across our Airbus fleet and contribute to our communities in a meaningful way as good corporate citizens.”
The cost to retrofit the remaining fleet will be less than $1 million, JetBlue said.
