The InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown opened its doors last week. It is the tallest building west of Chicago, at 1,100 feet and 73 stories. It is also the flagship property of IHG’s westward expansion and the largest InterContinental property in the Americas, with 889 guestrooms.

“This is a historic moment for the InterContinental brand as we open the largest hotel in the Americas region and redefine the Los Angeles skyline, brought to life through our partnership with Korean Air and Hanjin International Corporation on this new marquee hotel,” said Elie Maalouf, CEO, InterContinental Hotels Group, The Americas.

Part of the Wilshire Grand Center, the property is a quick walk from the Staples Center and L.A. Live. It is the first LEED Gold-Certified structure in downtown Los Angeles, and boasts 95,000 square feet of event space, including a 21,000-square-foot ballroom and 33 meeting rooms.

Among the 889 guestrooms are 109 suites, each with exclusive entertainment systems, amenities and floor-to-ceiling windows. The Presidential suite offers 2,500 square feet with a lounge, dining room, piano, kitchenette, walk-in closets and soaking tub with a view.

On-site dining includes five restaurants and outlets. The Lobby Vodka Bar & Lounge serves updated classics, while the 69th-floor Sora provides made-to-order omakase and sushi. Dekkadance is on the same floor, with an open kitchen offering pizza and more. La Boucherie is the property’s high-end steak house, mixing Californian and French cuisine. Lastly, Spire 73 is the tallest open-air bar in the Western Hemisphere, with 360-degree views from the 73rd floor, alongside fire pits and fountains.

“We set out to create a hotel that not only would forever change the skyline of Los Angeles, but where service and high-design are integral to every luxury guest room, restaurant and amenity. As such, our commitment is that the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown hotel exceeds well beyond our guest’s expectations,” said Jean-Jacques Reibel, general manager.

What Maui Visitors Need to Know

There’s a lot happening on the beautiful island of Maui and recovery from the devastating fires in Lahaina is underway. Among happy events is a gorgeous cultural redesign of all the suites and villas at Fairmont Kea Lani, plus the opening of the resort’s Hale Kukuna — a 2,000-square-foot cultural center that focuses on sharing Hawai’ian culture, traditions and history, with the goal of a reciprocal sharing of ‘ike (knowledge) and mo’olelo (stories) that link the island’s storied past and vibrant present.
