India To Roll Out New Bullet Train

Jul 28, 2016
General

India is getting into the high-speed train game with the rollout of a new bullet train that will run from Delhi to Varanasi. The trip will take just two hours and 40 minutes. With the plan to build the train fast-tracked, the country’s second bullet train will cover 486 miles with stops in Aligarh, Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow and Sultanpur en route to Varanasi. The train trip between Delhi and Varanasi currently takes between 10 to 14 hours. The new train route is part of a larger Delhi to Kolkata bullet train project, which will whisk passengers from the two major cities set nearly 1,000 miles apart in less than five hours. That’s a huge improvement over the 18-hour trek the route currently entails. India’s bullet train projects are largely funded by Japan. There’s not yet a start date for the Delhi-Varanasi line, but there are hopes it will be completed by November. India’s first high-speed train runs, called the Gatimaan Express, just went online earlier this year. The train takes passengers from Delhi to Agra in 100 minutes, traveling at speeds of around 100 mph. Newsletter sign-up
