“Don’t worry about a thing / ’Cause every little thing gonna be alright.” Bob Marley’s famed mantra is deceptive in its simplicity. How easy is it, actually, to feel hopeful and relaxed in your everyday life? Well, in the musician’s homeland, this state of mind is (unsurprisingly) far more attainable. When you travel to Jamaica, you’re not only transporting yourself to a tropical paradise of wild rainforests and crystal-clear water, but you’re also entering an entirely new state of mind fostered by the unique culture and heritage of this island nation. In the words of another famous musician (and noted lover of the tropics), Jimmy Buffett: “Changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes.”
Luckily, Jamaica’s intoxicating island vibes prove as easily accessible for business travelers as for strict pleasure seekers. I’ve visited this northern Caribbean island many times over the years for both work and leisure purposes. I took my first trip more than a decade ago with a couple of friends, exploring Kingston and Montego Bay, and returned last spring with a far larger group — more than a dozen visitors — for a villa vacation in the heavenly Jamaican coastal town of Hopewell. During both trips I discovered endless activities for travelers to enjoy while companions finish their business obligations or share together after the working hours (thankfully) conclude for the day.

For active travelers, no shortage of opportunities to venture into the tropical wild of Jamaica await — from hiking amid the coffee plantations of the Blue Mountains, named after the cloudy mist hanging above its towering green peaks, to rafting the Rio Grande River in Port Antonio. Or opt for a rainforest excursion in Ocho Rios, where travelers can explore the majesty of Dunn’s River Falls and embark on offroad adventures via ATV and zip-line amid the treetops of the forest canopies of Yaaman Adventure Park or Mystic Mountain. Another uniquely Jamaican afternoon excursion: a seaside horseback ride in Montego Bay, where aquatically inclined equines guide their passengers into the Caribbean Sea. (Not too far out, of course, but far enough that the turquoise waters splash against the saddle).
The endless, white-sand shoreline of Montego Bay has been memorialized by none other than musical legends (and coastline authorities) The Beach Boys. Those California surfers are just some of many musicians and artists to find inspiration within the island nation, whether it’s the Rolling Stones, Grace Jones and Willie Nelson seeking refuge in the bucolic mountain villas of Strawberry Hill outside Kingston (a hotel established by Island Records founder Chris Blackwell) or Steve McQueen staying in a houseboat (now a present-day floating restaurant) moored in the Bogue Lagoons while filming Papillon.

Jamaica’s rich musical history created a legacy of reggae and dancehall that persists to this day (and whose influence can be heard in popular songs on the radio), and culturally curious visitors should pay a visit to the Bob Marley Museum. But this musical heritage, like the tremendous local cuisine, isn’t something travelers even need to seek out directly. The tradition of live music and performances, just like menu staples such as jerk chicken and Jamaican patties, persists in everyday island life. And if it’s high-end travel you’re after, you’ll find plenty of options — whether it’s the iconically elegant Round Hill Resort, the honeymoon site for none other than Jackie and John F. Kennedy, or the 400-acre Half Moon, a legendary, royal-worthy retreat beloved by Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles.
Jamaica may truly have something for everyone, but visitors shouldn’t be overwhelmed by the diversity of options; though it’s the third-largest island in the Caribbean, Jamaica proves easily navigable. The island nation, roughly the size of Connecticut and recognizing English as its official language, boasts many attractions and activities a mere scenic road trip away from your preferred resort. Getting to the island itself proves rather easy, especially when compared to other nations further south in the West Indies. Situated in the Northern Caribbean Sea, the mountainous island lies just 600 miles south of Miami. Plenty of direct flights from major U.S. cities make it easier than ever to “get there fast and then take it slow.”

Lastly, don’t let reports of last November’s Hurricane Melissa deter your plans. Jamaica is fully open and actively welcoming travelers, with all three international airports open as well as major attractions across the island — from the Blue Mountains in the east to Montego Bay’s famed beaches in the west and up to the northern rainforests of Ocho Rios. Now it is more important than ever to visit this gorgeous island, as your support will boost local businesses and communities relying on tourism. Rarely do you get the chance to travel for such a good cause. Read “Info to Go” on the preceding page for practical tips to inform your next getaway to Jamaica, a true island paradise where the artistic heritage and the culture are as enticing and appealing as the tropical landscape.

INFO TO GO
Jamaica offers three main international airports, befitting its status as one of the most popular islands to visit in the Caribbean. While Uber and Lyft do not operate on island, taxis and car rentals are available at the airport arrivals gates. Most tourists prefer Sangster International Airport, only 10 miles from downtown Montego Bay and with easy access to nearby resorts. Norman Manley Interna- tional Airport lies a mere 20-minute drive from downtown Kingston and is favored by business travelers visiting the nation’s capital as well as tourists visiting the eastern side of the island. For high-end travelers, Ian Fleming International Airport, a luxury gateway in Ocho Rios, services private and charter flights.
Following the passage of Hurricane Melissa, Jamaica’s five cruise ports are operational, and the island continues to welcome cruise guests at Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Falmouth, Port Antonio and Kingston/Port Royal.

Between these, cities give way to small communities with art galleries, local restaurants and shops selling beachwear.
