The Hyatt House is the first new hotel to open in Evanston in 15 years. The 114-room property debuted in the spring. Only a five-minute walk to the Metra Station and eight miles from Chicago O’Hare International Airport, the hotel lies in the heart of the walkable city.
It was our first experience staying at a Hyatt House. The friendly bellhop and parking attendant greeted us as we entered the bright, modern lobby. The staff quickly checked us in to a wheelchair-accessible, second-floor guestroom. The oversized room, at 448 square feet. contained a comfy king Hyatt Grand Bed and a large sofa. Our window looked out on the center of town and the shades were easily raised and closed with the press of a button. A work desk with a lamp was tucked in the corner. The contemporary room decorated in browns and grays had one bedside lamp and could benefit from additional lighting. Amenities we appreciated included a mini fridge, microwave, coffeemaker, keyless entry and free WiFi. Tacked to our mini fridge was a checklist of items guests may borrow to make their stay feel more like home —board games, a high chair, free weights and a blender.
After traveling for a week, we were delighted the hotel had a coin-operated laundry. The Hyatt House is designed for the extended-stay traveler. Guests can purchase frozen meals and snack items from the 24-hour H Market or grill their dinner on the outdoor patio. When the work day is done, there’s a casual bar in the lobby. Our favorite place to relax was the second-floor outdoor terrace with baskets filled with blooming flowers.
Breakfast is complimentary with a large buffet and a made-to-order omelet bar. After our meal, we took a walk to the lake. We passed several restaurants, turn-of-the-century homes and lovely churches. Guests who travel with a vehicle can valet park for $29 per day.
Located less than a mile from Northwestern University, the Hyatt House is sure to be popular with families visiting the campus or alumni returning to their alma mater.
