Until Nov. 10, size matters a lot at Madrid’s fabulous Prado. A selection of 281 works from the museum’s own collection have been gathered together for an exhibition entitled Captive Beauty: Fra Angelico to Fortuny. In a variety of mediums, but sharing the single characteristic of being small in format, the works include portraits on different surfaces from wood and canvas to copper plate, tin and slate. Sculptures in bronze, wood, clay, marble, alabaster and polychrome wood — each created on a small scale — reveal startling detail.
Seventeen galleries in the Jerónimos Building serve as exhibit space. Some of the works haven’t been displayed in many years, have been on loan to other museums, or have simply been obscured by larger, more famous works within the museum. The earliest pieces date to the 14th century, and represent a wide selection of artists, styles and countries. Videos and recorded commentary by Manuela Mena, chief curator of 18th century art and Goya, supplement the exhibit.
