For the first time ever, a collaboration between the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG), Swiss International Air Lines and Geneva Tourism came to fruition at a cruising altitude of 30,000 feet. In this unique collaboration, a watch was carefully assembled during an unexpected watchmaking workshop on a SWISS flight from Geneva to New York.

The crafting of the watch highlighted the craftsmanship and watchmaking expertise of Geneva, which was carried out by a flight crew member accompanied by an independent master watchmaker. The watch made in the air was recently unveiled alongside 84 other watches as part of the GPHG traveling exhibition in New York, which ended Oct. 22.

Each year, the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève celebrates the best of Genevan creativity and horological excellence. Begun in 2011, the traveling exhibition has spanned the globe, including exhibitions in Bangkok, Paris, Rome, Mexico City, Vienna, Sydney, Taipei and more.

Geneva keeps the tradition and culture of horology alive today through various innovative approaches. Visitors can enjoy countless watchmaking experiences, including themed guided tours and watch assembly workshops. After wrapping up in New York, the GPHG traveling exhibit heads on to Musée Rath in Geneva, Oct. 26–Nov. 12.
