Ready for Spain’s autumn festivals? A few to enjoy:
- Wine Harvest Festival in Jerez de la Frontera (through Sept. 18): Celebrate the beginning of the wine harvest in Andalusia. Events include grape stomping, street theater, music, equestrian parades, riding exhibitions, vineyard tours, wine tastings, art exhibitions and flamenco performances.
- Árabe Andalusí Festival in Malaga (Sept. 17–18): Music, dance, poetry, painting, shows, gastronomy and festivals are part of the fun in the village of Salares. The village is distinguished by traditional architecture, and the festival helps to promote cultural initiatives in the region.
- Carthaginians and Romans Fiesta in Cartagena (Sept. 16–25) kicks off with a reenactment of the taking of the city in 209 AD by the Romans. A spectacular parade takes place on Saturday, filled with gladiators (not real ones), wild beasts (definitely not real ones) and plenty of music, food and fun.
- Festival of la Mercè in Barcelona (Sept. 22–25): Music, fireworks, audiovisual performances with projections, circus shows and street art are all on tap for this annual festival. The Parc de la Ciutadella will be the setting for the core festival, while traditional offerings including human towers, falconers and tabalers (drummers); other street performers can be found in the historic Barri Gòtic. A fabulous Firework Musical Display will take place on the Avinguda de Maria Cristina on the last night of the festival.

Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.

Japan is a destination that rewards repeat visits because no two regions — or seasons — feel quite the same. One moment, you’re wandering through centuries-old geisha districts in Kanazawa. The next, you’re watching neon reflections dance across Tokyo streets long after midnight.
