Expedia released the results of its inaugural Expedia 2015 Hotel Etiquette Study, which asked 1,022 Americans to rank the most frustrating behavior exhibited by other hotel guests.
The list of hotel etiquette violations, from most to least annoying, includes:
- Inattentive parents, 67 percent
- The Hallway Hellraisers, 64 percent
- The Complainers, 54 percent
- The In-Room Revelers, 52 percent
- The Bickerers, 26 percent
- The Poolside Partiers, 22 percent
- The Loudly Amorous, 21 percent
- The Hot Tub Canoodlers, 20 percent
- The Business Bar Boozer, 12 percent
- The Elevator Chatterbox, 6 percent
Additionally, the Expedia survey looked at Americans’ tipping habits. While 27 percent report they do not tip hotel employees at all, 51 percent of Americans tip housekeepers. Personal habits may play into the decision to tip housekeeping: 80 percent keep their rooms tidy, while 20 percent of guests rely solely on housekeeping.
Other tipping habits include:
- Attempting to tip for an upgrade: 3 percent
- Room Service: 40 percent
- Valet: 31 percent
- Porter: 21 percent
- Concierge: 10 percent
- Cabana Attendants: 7 percent
Some other hidden hotel habits revealed:
- 26 percent of Americans hoarded toiletries to take home
- 9 percent have hidden multiple people in their room overnight without telling the hotel
- 8 percent have secretly taken items from their hotel room
- 5 percent have smoked in a non-smoking room
- 2 percent have eavesdropped on neighboring guests
- 74 percent consider room service a luxury
- 54 percent of Americans do use their towels multiple times for environmental reasons and at the hotel’s prompting
- 6 percent haggle over the rate at check-in
