Visitors to and citizens of the European Union will soon be able to access WiFi connections throughout the member countries, without having to settle in at a café or restaurant.
Within the next four years, the EU plans to make WiFi hotspots available in major public areas within the region. By 2020, Jean-Claude Juncker, president, European Commission, declared the EU would equip small villages and big cities alike with high-speed wireless connection capabilities. By 2025, Juncker hopes to update these connections with 5G speeds.
Not only will this regional connectedness be beneficial for the layperson needing to access the internet for work or personal reasons, but the expansion of WiFi capabilities will also create more than 2 million jobs.
In addition, the EU also hopes to eliminate roaming charges across the member countries, a plan first promised in 2015 and seemingly allowed 90-day roaming-free periods, drawing much criticism. In response, the EU plans to draft a new proposal that will clarify the plans for a roam-less region.
