The Knight Foundation is bringing travelers and residents in four U.S. cities the opportunity to view larger-than-life versions of classic museum pieces, right on the streets, with the new InsideOut summer program. Large-scale reproductions will be scattered across select destinations, often within easy walking or biking distance of one another. Participating museums include the Akron Art Museum, Detroit Institute of Arts, Pérez Art Museum Miami and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Featured works include selections from Paul Gauguin, Claude Monet, Andy Warhol and more.
The program coincides with the #InsideOutUSA photo contest, hosted on Instagram. Participants can meet at InsideOut locations 6–9 p.m., June 3, to document their experience with the program. By tagging their museum and adding #InsideOutUSA, photos will be entered to win a contest judged by local celebrities.
Each destination is celebrating the event in its own way. Akron is installing 40 art pieces across eight communities, as well as hosting an InsideOut block party with food, guided tours and art-related activities. Detroit is planning bike and walking tours, a two-day art festival and costume contests inspired by the artwork on display. In Philadelphia, guests can spot artwork in 12 communities, many within walking distance from the city’s other popular attractions, such as Independence Hall and the Betsy Ross House.
“It is one thing to see such incredible works of art in a museum, but it is an entirely new experience to view them outdoors and in your community. By bringing InsideOut to cities across the U.S., we’re able to share the treasures of the museums more broadly and engage people directly as they go about their everyday lives,” said Victoria Rogers, vice president for arts, Knight Foundation.

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
